Princess Alia is a preborn. She had full awareness before she was born, and the spirts of others lingered inside her. Being a preborn can also lead to possesion or otherwise known as abomination. Once a preborn has taken spice, a large quanity usually, they are at risk to be possessedby the enigma of shared lives hovering inside of them. In other words, the spirts that linger in their awareness take over the preborn and leads them to do unwanted things.
Sadly, this happens to Alia. Alia loves her family and would have done anything to help her brother. Yet, at the age of fifteen, her brother went into the desert, letting her gain the power her brother had as emperor. During this time, she didn't know what to do, she was afraid, and this lead her to the use of spice in an attempt to see the future to aide her in her rule.
Because of possession, she risked the lives of her family, although at the end of her story, she couldn't face herself to allow the demons to take over her and kill Leto II (nephew), the future emperor of the Atreides line. Therefore she came to the decision and committed suicide in the trial of the abomination.
